Spring is here for a short visit….let’s enjoy it!

These next few days here in Michigan, the weather is in the mid 50’s to early 60’s and it feels amazing.  We finally have the sun shining after a very dull January and maybe some of this sunshine will help lift some spirits and winter blah moods.

We are in the last month of hockey season, with a practice with the MSU Hockey team under our belts, a shootout game during the MSU/Wisconsin hockey game and a hockey tournament this next weekend.  Brody started playoffs last night and he has a busy next few weeks with that finishing up.  He plays PeeWee B hockey and loves it!! Caden is on a Squirt B hockey team and it’s his passion right now.

Caden has started indoor baseball practice and Lacrosse has started for Brody although he hasn’t got to do much practices because hockey gets in the way still.

Spring is right around the corner and I can’t wait for the backyard to look like this again!  Green grass, pretty flowers and bright sun shining on our backs!  We all need a little sunshine now and again.  In just a few shorts weeks it will be spring break, and then we will have baseball and lacrosse to sit outside in hopefully warm weather instead of a cold hockey rink.

Please stick around warm weather!

Busy hockey time of the year!!

1511199_10100416865660321_7307662002463760309_nAs most of you know, both my kids love sports! And right now we are in the full swing of hockey season with games every weekend and a few during the week!  Brody, who is 12, is in PeeWee Hockey and Caden, who is turning 8 next week, is playing Squirt Hockey.  They both LOVE the sport and we love watching them play!  Detroit_Red_Wings2

We are headed to a Detroit Red Wings hockey game next month.  I wanted to be able to go Joe Louis Arena one more time before they open up the new Little Caesars Arena and with our own hockey schedule it was very hard to find a time to go.  But we found a date and got our tickets!! I’m so excited because I LOVE going to Hockeytown.

If you’ve never been to a NHL hockey game, you need to go!  And if you’ve never been to Hockeytown, you REALLY need to go.  Watching an NHL hockey game is like no other professional sport.  There is so much action, crowd interaction and it’s just a fun sport to watch.  We used to go all the time back when I was in middle school and high school and I LOVED watching the game.  I even had a University of Michigan hockey jersey that my parents got me for Christmas one year.  And then I met Chris, who grew up playing hockey, and watched him play some, and now my son’s love playing the sport so I’m so glad it’s still in my life!

Michigan State Upcycled T-Shirt Dress for little girls!

So I live around the East Lansing area and MSU is big here, I mean BIG! But I’m still a Michigan girl at heart.  But when I kept having these ideas for up-cycled dresses in my head, I KNEW that sports themed ones would be BIG hits around here because of our big rivals from sports.  So I ordered some fabric, had a few shirts that I had found and made this SUPER cute Michigan State recycled dress made with black and white polka dots!  Didn’t it turn out just adorable!

15871915_10100984458564591_4547495326843006339_n

This was a size 2T/3T and I had my friend’s little model try it on for me to make sure the sizing from the pattern was correct.  It turned out amazing and doesn’t she look so cute!  She’s repping her school with pride with that big ol’ grin!

15872023_10154895792803343_2745844653995796473_nSo I’ll be making a TON more of these in the upcoming months, I just got a bunch more fabric and a lot more shirts to use! I can’t wait to show them off.  If you’d be interested in one, go to my Etsy page or my Facebook page and message me!  If you have a shirt you’d like me to use, you can send it to me and a custom up-cycled dress can be made for you.

Upcycled kids clothing

So I’ve had an Etsy business for quite some time and I do lots of fun embroidery and vinyl things.  But I’ve wanted to try and make kids clothing for some time now.  Well I purchased a serger last month and I’ve made a few things and now that Christmas is over, I’m excited to try some new patterns out!

upcylcedblogI made this upcycled dress for my niece and it turned out so great! I found the shirt at a thrift store and went and got some matching fabrics to go along with it and turned it into a cute dress!  I found a bunch of other cute shirts at the thrift store that I can’t wait to try and make into cute outfits also.

My mom has been making these cute upcycled scarves for quite a while now and she took a break but lots of people have been asking for them again so she made some more this holiday season.

I’ll be posting what I make on my Facebook page but you can also follow along on my Pinterest page too and see my new ideas as they come to life!

So Santa brought you an Instant Pot for Christmas? Here’s what you need to know!

Santa was nice to you this year and brought you an Instant Pot for Christmas this year.  I’ve had mine since last year and I love it!!  It makes meal time so much easier especially when you want to make real food for your family and not the junk easy fast food you usually have time for.  I know what it’s like to have a chaotic lifestyle, I have 2 boys that eat tons and play lots of sports.  And with 2 businesses that we run out of our house, sometimes dinner time is not the easiest!  I love making hard boiled eggs, potato salad, roast and mashed potatoes in mine!  I’ve also made beef n broccoli and a few other yummy things too!!
You can also use your Instant Pot to make desserts.  I’ve made homemade cinnamon applesauce and I’ve also made an oreo cheesecake!!  This thing is amazing.  There are a few recipe pages out there that I read, I also read them on Pinterest and I have some groups on Facebook that I’m on that also help.

Looking to get into embroidery? Stop here for what you’ll need!

I always had a want to make cute monogrammed shirts, saying how cute they were and I’d love to learn to do them someday.  Then came the reality of a work bonus one year that allowed me to purchase a machine that I wanted so I could start doing what I knew I’d eventually would love.  If your like me, the following will help you a ton and get you well on your way to introduction to embroidery.

Things you’ll want to purchase-

Embroidery Machine

Thread

Interfacing

Scissors to trim designs

Now first off, you’ll need a machine.  I knew that I wanted to start out with a 5×7 sized hoop because I didn’t want to be limited with my designs and grow out of a machine within a week of having it.  So after a lot of research I decided on a Brother PE-770.  This is an embroidery only machine, meaning you can’t use it for anything else but that.  It does not work as a regular sewing machine at all.  You can do applique, monograms and lots of different embroidery designs with this machine though.  When you start out, it can be intimidating but I watched lots of you-tube videos and read lots of blogs so I knew how to use it.  I also managed to get a good deal on the machine, after stalking the internet for sales and deals (who doesn’t love a good bargain) I found a machine on Amazon Warehouse that had been returned and they were reselling for a discounted price.  Now some might say that’s crazy but the description said that it was in great shape and wasn’t used.  They were right, it still had the tape on certain things, meaning the person might of bought it and said wow, I don’t know what I’m doing so they just sent it back.

After you get your machine, you’ll want to read the book and go over some of the designs that come pre-loaded on the machine and try doing a few basic things with it.  There are a few different alphabets pre-loaded on the machine plus a few other designs.  You’ll want to get a USB dongle so you can save designs you’ve downloaded from the internet too.  This is easier than trying to hook your computer up to the computer all the time and then you can use it over and over again.

You’ll need to get assorted colors of thread that you will want for the designs you’ll be doing.  You’ll also need bobbin thread for the machine.  You can either buy pre-wound bobbins or the machine has an area to wind the bobbins up for you.  I liked using the Brother bobbin thread, it seemed to work best with that machine.

You’ll also need fabric if your wanting to do appliques.  Different colors will be needed for different designs.  There are SO many websites out there with designs to download and use.

480327_10151574962323343_285501609_n

One of the very first things I made were these name pillows for all sorts of people in my family.  I bought a basic applique alphabet from someone online, and then would line up each letter and stitch out the pillows and sew it right up.  I just LOVED that I was able to make personalized gifts for family members.  I always feel that handmade gifts come from love so that means more than some store bought gift for sure.

You will have a few other accessories for your machine, you’ll want some really good scissors to trim your applique fabrics.  There will be tight corners and hard areas to cut, so I love this style.  The curved scissors.

Or this style-

But it all depends on what style you’d prefer.

You’ll also need stabilizer because that goes under the fabric so that you have a stiff background for it to stitch into and hold the design up through the fabric.  There are cut away, tear away, thick, thin and other kinds.  Again, once you start learning embroidery you’ll know what kinds you’ll need for what projects.

This is pretty much what you’ll need to get started.  I have since grown out of this Brother PE770 machine and I have a Brother PE655e 6 needle embroidery machine now.  I LOVE IT!! I love that I can do SO many different things, make such large designs and embroider jackets for my son’s hockey team with ease.  You’ll find what you love and move up and change machines as you grow.
